We know it can be daunting coming to a new place alone, sometimes especially if you're part of the LGBT+ community - but that's why we call it a community! LGBT+ Society is a really good place to look if you're searching for like-minded friends. It is free to join and our events are open to everyone! The aims of our society are to give people a chance to meet other LGBT+ people, and to give you a channel to go through if you have any LGBT+ related issues at University. Our society will look a little different this year, as everything does right now, but here's a taste of what we're planning so far: - video call socials - video call film nights - video call game nights - video call caucuses Please follow our socials (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagam), and sign up to our newsletter (above) to keep up with events and plans with us, and find anymore info on our website. Welcome NoteWelcome to Sheffield from your LGBT+ Representative Committee! Whether you’re new or a returning student there should be useful information here for you.
Off the bat, we are not a society, you don’t have to sign up or pay for membership! The committee is here to represent all students of minority gender identities / sexual orientations within the Sheffield University Students Union. We aim to provide welfare support, social opportunities, and campaigning platforms for all LGBT+ students. More information on all of these can be found in sections of the site! Being LGBT+ at University can be very daunting especially when you start off living with strangers, but the LGBT+ Committee will always be here for a quiet and confidential chat whenever you want. Many of us didn't get involved with the LGBT+ scene when we came to uni due to many fears, but we can assure you it’s a welcoming, comfortable and fun environment for everyone, so get stuck in! Our committee meetings are open and we would love input from all students, regardless of whether you are on committee. We will be posting about our meetings each week on the Facebook group “LGBT+ at Uni of Shef”. Honestly there is no such thing as a dumb question so feel free to ask away! So whether you’re new to Sheffield, a returning student looking to see what’s out there, or an already active member of the LGBT+ Community, I hope you get some use out of the site!
