Trans 101 - The Basics
A trans person is any person who was assigned a gender at birth that doesn’t match their current gender identity. A trans woman is a person who was assigned male at birth, but identifies as - and therefore of course is - a woman, while a trans man is someone who was assigned female at birth, but identifies as, and is a man.
People can also feel that they do not fall neatly into a single or any gender category. These gender identities are called non-binary and can include having a fluctuating sense of gender (gender fluid) or not having a sense of gender identity at all (agender).
Some things you can do:
Don’t ask to see photos of a person before transition or use or ask for a trans person’s old name (or ‘deadname’)’. The time in a trans person’s life before transitioning or coming out can be an intensely private or sometimes painful one.
Don’t ask someone about their genitals, secondary sex characteristics or medical history (unless you’re a GP and helping someone who says they hurt when they pee - if you are, by all means, go ahead!)
